F is for: Friday

Just another day of the week, you say? Not for this girl.
The acronym TGIF has even been created in it's honor.
A restaurant chose that name    and
a movie was named after it!                  Product Details

As for myself, i stopped TGIF'ing people while I was working on the Tuesday-Saturday shift and it dawned on me that Friday is not the precursor to 2 days off for everyone!  and TGIS just doesn't have that same flair, don't you agree,  Peoples  in the Peanut Gallery?  So now i only TGIF myself !  It’s a real good habit to do as you don’t have to wait for someone else to do it to you! (see Atchoo blog on April 1)

This Friday, though, is very special to me, and to a few billion Christians around the world.  In French, we called it “Vendredi Saint” which translates to “Holy Friday”;  here in British Columbia and lots of other Anglophone localities, it is called “Good Friday”.  That has been extremely confusing to a lot of people.   Why would a day that commemorates the death of our Savior be considered good?  That is a question I have asked myself and here’s what I’ve come up with. Allow me to guide you to the root of this appellation.
The Christian faith is based on the fact that Jesus resurrected from the dead and for that, He had to die.  So that is definitely one reason it could be called “ good “; the latter could not have happened without the former .
So, searching for meaning,  there are several other words than can be used in lieu of “good”:  All right, not bad, satisfactory, ethical, useful, functional, edible, satisfying, healthful, pleasant, competent, effective, favorable,  beneficial, etc., etc., etc.
None of the above would I attach to such a significant day as today.  However,  here is the synonym that definitely fits the circumstances:   “Holy, set apart for God”.
I mean, what did God say at the end of each day when he created the world?  Genesis tells us:
And God saw that it was good.”

Also, looking at the root of the word “Goodbye”, we find the old English expression: “ God be with ye”; might “Good Friday” come from “God Friday”?

So signing off, asking your forgiveness for putting up with my good chronicle or my chronicle on good, pick one!   I promise not to preach to you this coming Easter Sunday.  One, we get the day off from blogging and Two, we’ve gone through the letter “E” already.   Been there, done that!  J

Better be a Little “S” than a  Little Less

  1. In Katy Perry's song "Last Friday Night", we hear the crowd saying TGIF in the background quite a few times.
With this F blog, you almost did the G blog so you'll have to find another one!
Could Friday come from the Olde English Fryday, the Day of the Fry which now would be the Day of the Fries!
It would have been fun if Edible would have been chosen instead of Good!!! ;)
