B is for: Between You, Me and the Post!

Psst!   Do you know where this expression comes from?  If I tell you, can you keep it hush-hush?   It would seem that as early as the 1600s, there is mention of being “deaf as a post”, and I can really see how perfect it is to confide in a post because you know the information won’t go any further.

Now, I’ve taken care of me, and the post.  What about you?  How trustworthy are you?   If I add you to the equation, does the word spread out like wildfire or does it stay with you?   Am I certain that my confidence won’t be breached and that my words won’t be repeated?

I’m counting on you!  And yes, peoples of the Peanut Gallery, the expression keeps it’s meaning even if we’re talking bedposts  ,
lamp posts
or fence posts .Fencepost : A fence running alongside a crop field on a frosty morning

A post is a post is a post, unless of course it’s a blog post and then it doesn’t count!   Free for All!   Enjoy J

Salut, mes amis, and yes,  you have my permission to tell the world!  J

  5. I didn't know that one in english! If you want to really get it interesting, think about " ... between you, me and the post office !!!"
In french, we already have a few similar expressions but they are less and less in use nowadays! The one I have heard most often is " ... entre toi et moi et la boîte à beurre!" and the meaning is about the same as far as I know!
    Good post again!

    1. Alana: thank you! I've just taken a second to check your blog address and I know i'm going to be there tonight, reading away. I'm a fan of words; actually, both my brother and sister are joining me on this challenge, in french!. Sister is blogging A to Z in her paleo cooking blog and Brother is blogging in his Flikr account with A to Z pictures and comments to complement. What a great example for our kids! Cheers and the best to you! Sylvie

  7. Love knowing where expressions began. I just signed on to the A-Z challenge, nearly at the last minute, but I'm trying to visit every blog at least once.

  11. My mum always used to say "its between you, me and the gate post" when she gave me money and didn't want my Dad to know.
