G is for: The GIGO Principle

To start with,  let me remind you of a few other "acronym" principles which I think most of us are familiar with:

According to good old reliable Wikipedia , in it's search for exciting accounting procedures,  “FIFO stands for first-in, first-out, meaning that the oldest inventory items are recorded as sold first.”  LIFO is similar except that the last-in is considered as sold first.
Why bother, I hear from the Peanut Gallery? These are techniques that can be beneficial to use by corporations to reduce taxes payable in times of inflation!  Ahhhhh!

Now, you should also have heard about BOGO, which means
 "Buy One Get One".

That should mean you get one (of something) free if you purchase one;  but often these days, I have seen Buy One Get One…. Half Price!  Well, still better than a slap on the cheek but we can all see where inflation and greed is taking all this!

Now let’s get to GIGO.
 [G(arbage) I(n,) G(arbage) O(ut).]

This principle is really “an informal rule holding that the integrity of output is dependent on the integrity of input.”  I mean, it does make sense that what you put in it dictates what comes out.
It is also being used to describe the bad decisions we make due to the lack of complete and accurate data.  Having said that, waiting for ALL data to be analyzed prior to making decisions can be mind boggling!   Often you’ll come up with “A.P.”  or “Analysis Paralysis ”!

Of course, we must not construe that everything that comes out of the computer is the truth, nothing but the truth: That creates Garbage In, Gospel Out.   That is an expansion on the old GIGO acronym that’s come out recently and talks about the inclination of the masses to blindly believe what the old PC spits out.

So,  Signing off on this beautiful Sunny Saturday, the Seventh Day of this challenge.   See ya on Monday!

Better to be a Little “S” than a Little Less

  1. I've never come across the acronym GIGO before, but it certainly makes sense!

  2. Thank you, Golden Eagle. Hey, who needs to know about GIGO when one can expand about General Relativity the way you do! Woah! I can't even figure out how to copy the A to Z Challenge button from the main blogsite to mine! I guess when I really learn to fly like you and have your perspective, i will learn to do it! Practice makes perfect, i'm told. Cheers and thanks for the visit. Sylvie

  3. Working with computers for a few years as told me that principle long ago! I still have to remind my bosses once in a while that we need accurate data to get usable results; even the best computer with the best program can't give reliable output (reports, statistics, predictions, etc.) with unreliable input!

  6. Hi. Checking in from the A to Z. I think the BOGO goes like this - - they raise the price on the one you're paying for, and then give you a "free" one :)

    1. Hi Judy: sure sounds like it, doesn't it? My lesson is: if it takes an acronym to say it... Beware ;o.
